{"id":120,"date":"2013-03-08T09:55:52","date_gmt":"2013-03-08T14:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stephentully.com\/?p=120"},"modified":"2013-03-08T09:55:52","modified_gmt":"2013-03-08T14:55:52","slug":"think-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephentully.com\/?p=120","title":{"rendered":"Think Big&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">One of my favorite authors\/life gurus is the charismatic football commentator\/ex-University of Notre Dame Head Coach (1988 National Championship), Lou Holtz. I was reminded this morning of a book Coach Holtz often refers to in his own writings and speeches.<em> (Side note, one of the things I like about Holtz is that he is a dreamer but also a &#8220;doer&#8221;, he walks the walk.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The book he credits to his goal setting ways was written in the 1950s by Dr. David Schwartz,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;The Magic of Thinking Big&#8221;<\/span>. This is a &#8220;must read&#8221; for anyone goal setting or looking for their path in life, young, middle-aged, or old.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Here are some of my favorite take-aways:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Beware of &#8220;Exusitis&#8221;. (Don&#8217;t make excuses)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Creative thinking &#8211; not just for artists.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; <strong>Believe it can be<\/strong>; Don&#8217;t believe anything is impossible (Positioning). Eliminate &#8220;impossible&#8221; from your vocabulary.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Average is &#8220;worst of the best&#8221; and &#8220;best of the worst&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Become and &#8220;experimental person&#8221; &#8211; try new things (I think this is really important and easy to implement with little things, i.e, new route to work)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Get up an hour early and do some daily planning.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; If you want something done, give it to a busy person.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Listening &#8211; leader does more listening.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Encourage others to talk, &#8220;What do you do?&#8221; (Takes practice and focus)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Confidence &#8211; no one is born with confidence. (Help those around you understand this.)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Action cures fear (One of my favorites and so true!)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Don&#8217;t wait for things to be &#8220;just right&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>Do what you fear doing.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Deposit only positive thoughts in memory bank, don&#8217;t dwell on negative situations.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Change attitudes by changing your daily actions.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Be a &#8220;front-<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">seater<\/span>&#8220;.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Practice speaking up.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Be the first to speak, be the icebreaker.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; When you speak slowly, you come across more confident.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Smile big &#8211; great medicine for confidence deficiency, great to do when most fearful<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; Appearance matters &#8211; look like the person you want to be<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">&#8211; <strong>Always give people more than they expect to get.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">There are many more, just a sampling.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">In the spirit of Lou Holtz and Dr. Schwartz, I am going to &#8220;action&#8221; 3 ideas from these today:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">1) Write down one creative way we can be more helpful to our clients.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">2) On phone call today, going to practice my listening skills by encouraging others to speak.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">3) Overcome &#8220;excusitis&#8221;- going to run outside despite the snowstorm.
